Jusuf Gërvalla

Jusuf Gërvalla was an Albanian poet, journalist and political activist from Kosovo who, in exile in Germany, became involved in organizing underground groups seeking republic status for Kosovo and the unification of Albanians. On 17 January 1982 he, his brother Bardhosh Gërvalla and Kadri Zeka were killed near Stuttgart. The killing became a turning point for the émigré networks from which the People's Movement for the Republic of Kosovo later emerged.

After the 1981 demonstrations, repression in Kosovo and the pursuit of activists moved part of Albanian political organizing into exile, especially to Germany and Switzerland [1].

The killing of 17 January 1982 in Untergruppenbach is widely attributed in the literature and in Albanian political memory to the Yugoslav state security service. This archive treats the attribution as a claim requiring further documentation, since the sources consulted do not include a court ruling that established it [2] [3].

After the killing, the émigré groups merged into the People's Movement for the Republic of Kosovo, whose networks later played a role in the creation of the KLA [3].
