History

This narrative is not a single wall of text. It is divided into seven periods, each with key dates, people, places, primary sources, scholarship and notes on the evidence. The move from peaceful to armed resistance is explained as a historical process, not a myth.

A decade that began with student protests and ended with the dismantling of autonomy: repression, rising nationalism and the mobilization of the miners and of Albanian society.

Before the war
The parallel state and peaceful resistance
After autonomy was abolished, Kosovo Albanians built parallel institutions and chose peaceful resistance. The strategy kept society alive, but it could not change Kosovo's international position.

Before the war

The 1998–1999 war
1998: from Drenica to open war
The attacks in Drenica in February and March 1998 turned a limited insurgency into open war. By October, hundreds of thousands of people had been displaced and international diplomacy was directly engaged.
