The 1981 demonstrations

Protests that began on 11 March 1981 in the University of Prishtina canteen grew in late March and early April into demonstrations across Kosovo demanding a republic. A state of emergency was declared and federal police and the army were deployed.

According to Ramet, the main dates were 11 March, 25–26 March, 31 March and 1–3 April, spreading from Prishtina to Podujevo, Vushtrri, Mitrovica, Ferizaj and elsewhere [1]. The authorities deployed federal police and the Yugoslav Army and declared a state of emergency [2] [3].

The death toll remains disputed. Official reports at the time spoke of no more than 9–11 dead; Amnesty International later learned that the party leadership had been told of over 300, while Ramet cites an estimate of up to about 1,000 [4] [1]. The archive presents these as sourced estimates, not a single fact.

This point is disputed. Official figures and later estimates differ by more than an order of magnitude; no independent named count has been published.
